History: Season One
Personality: Mohinder is a fairly complex man, intelligent but horrifically naive, trusting but with a recently developed sense of paranoia from the trauma he’s been through.
Mohinder was born and raised in Chennai, India. He was born into a wealthy, high caste family and lived a life of privilege, well away from the slums and polluted districts that constitute much of any major Indian city.
Unbeknownst to him, Mohinder was born in the hopes that he would have the necessary antibodies to treat and cure his older sister, Shanti, who was dying of an unknown illness. Shanti died shortly before Mohinder was born and all evidence of her removed by his father, who couldn’t cope with the grief of coming so close to saving his precious little girl, and yet losing her anyway.
With this schism, Mohinder grew up very much the apple of his mother’s eye, with a sort of distance between him and his geneticist father. He went to a boarding school in England for his final five years of education and stayed there to complete his undergraduate degree in science.
He returned to Chennai university, where his father taught, to do his Doctorate in Genetics, like his father. Their relationship was amicable but distant. A distant father had become something of a role model in his life during his years in England. This isn’t to be mistaken as a lack of love. Mohinder and his father loved each other dearly, as only family could, but their relationship was never particularly friendly, like Mohinder and his mother.
Chandra became obsessed with Shanti’s illness and what he believed was a genetic marker that made her susceptible to the illness, a marker Mohinder lacked. Chandra used his own calculations and the recently released Human Genome Project to begin searching for individuals with a set of genetic markers which he believed would trigger unusual, superhuman abilities. The next stage of human evolution.
Mohinder tried to get his father to let him in on his research, but his father called him weak and emotional and left to go to America to try and locate people from his list. Mohinder was shattered, to be so cruelly scorned by the father he’d strived to make proud his whole life. He left, disavowing his father and his research as insane.
It was the last words Chandra and Mohinder shared. Chandra was killed some time later. Mohinder went to America to find out what his father was doing and how he had died. He hasn’t forgiven himself for that last fight with his father, but he also hasn’t forgiven Chandra for his words, or for ‘replacing’ him with the man who would later murder him.
It was during his time back and forth from America that he discovered that he had a sister, and had been conceived as a cure for her illness. He isn’t sure how he feels about it all yet, finding out he had an older sister who died and that his family hid it from him. It explains much of his father’s distance to him, but does nothing to relieve the hurt of that distance, nor the sting of finding out that he was kept in the dark.
Because of his upbringing, Mohinder tends to be very trusting. He was raised in a sheltered life, surrounded by family and friends and people who were aware of Shanti’s death and made sure to help the Suresh’s by keeping an eye on Mohinder as he grew up. Duplicity isn’t really in his nature, he’s earnest and forthright and assumes that people will agree with him and his logic if they just see the evidence he’s worked from.
He does have a bit of a temper. Usually it’s just frustration, but pushed to the edge, Mohinder has proved himself capable of some truly horrific things. He’s not proud of how low he went, but he isn’t sure he wouldn’t do it again under the same circumstances. He’s still struggling to reconcile the person he thought he was, a generous man who cares for others and wants to help them, with a man who can drug, torture and do illegal medical procedures on another human being, however monstrous that human is.
He isn’t sure if his justification of what he did means he was a person in exceptional circumstance, or someone who crossed a line and might do it again.
Powers/Abilities: Mohinder has no supernatural abilities. He is a regular human with a doctorate in genetics. He does speak three languages fluently (English, Hindi and Tamil) and a smattering of French, German and medical Latin.
